Meet Professor Celso Mathias
Celso Mathias is a visual artist and illustrator with over forty years of experience, born and residing in Rio de Janeiro. Since childhood, when he received his first drawing board, he discovered in art his vocation and his deepest way of expressing the world.
His output is vast and diverse: it includes paintings of landscapes, seascapes, boats, street scenes, and urban studies, as well as a consistent practice of live sketching, recorded in subways, boats, squares, and in the daily life of Rio de Janeiro. Celso works with
various techniques — oil, acrylic, watercolor and gouache — exploring light, atmosphere and movement.
Alongside his realistic work, he also develops his fantasy art, a field that expands the imagination with creatures, mythological characters, symbolic worlds, and dreamlike scenarios. This aspect emerged from his experience with editorial illustration, comics, and fiction covers, and has solidified in exhibitions and series that explore the surreal, the magical, and the extraordinary as a natural extension of creativity.
Throughout his career, Celso has worked as an illustrator for advertising, publishing houses, and agencies, collaborating on national and international projects. For about 20 years, he has also dedicated himself to teaching art. Since then, he has trained hundreds of students, from beginners to professionals, sharing technique, sensitivity, and a keen eye for individual expression.
