ABOUT THE ARTIST
CELSO MATHIAS
VISUAL ARTIST AND ILLUSTRATOR
FROM RIO DE JANEIRO - BRAZIL
From the moment he received his first drawing board from his parents at the age of 10, he understood that this profession was ingrained in his being, and since then he has respected the "Artist" within him. He clearly understood his mission as an artist, which was confirmed in this quote from the great poet Fernando Pessoa.
"Art consists of making others feel what we feel, of freeing them from themselves, offering them our personality for a special kind of liberation."

Celso Mathias is a visual artist, draftsman, painter, illustrator, and author, with a career built over decades of dedication to the visual arts. His work freely moves between drawing, painting, observation of daily life, urban memory, and imagination, reflecting a constant search for new forms of expression.
Throughout his career, he developed a wide variety of projects, techniques, and visual languages.
This multiplicity does not represent a dispersion of interests, but the natural result of an investigative stance towards art and human experience. Instead of limiting himself to a single formula or style, his work is born from curiosity, sensitive observation, and the permanent need to explore new poetic territories.
Landscapes, seascapes, urban sketches, travel journals, visual narratives, and imaginary universes coexist in his work as different manifestations of the same research.
On one hand, observational art stems from direct contact with the world, its places, people, landscapes, and everyday events. On the other hand, fantasy art delves into imagination, dreams, and the symbolic universe, creating images and narratives that do not depend on visible reality.
Between these two territories, his work finds a field of freedom where reality and imagination can intersect. What is observed can transform into memory; memory can transform into image; and the image can pave the way for entirely imagined worlds.
Through drawing and painting, Celso Mathias explores the relationships between memory, lived experience, and poetic imagination.
His work seeks to reveal the invisible layers present in places, memories, and everyday encounters, but also to explore what emerges when imagination transcends the limits of the visible world.
Between the real and the imagined, his images construct territories where memory, affection, observation, and invention continuously engage in dialogue.
More than representing the world, his work seeks to recreate it, transforming personal and collective experiences into visual narratives open to contemplation, reflection, and enchantment.
Currently, his work encompasses series and projects ranging from observational drawing and figurative painting to fantasy art, dreamlike images, and more free and experimental investigations.
Different languages coexist in a work that maintains as its central axis the poetic exploration of human experience through image.
